Foundation stone of the project laid by union ministers Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley on 8 March 2019. Under construction Vadodara Mumbai Expressway has been subsumed in this project. The total cost of the project is expected to be ₹1,00,000 Crore Approx. On 12th February 2023, the first phase of Delhi-Mumbai Expressway from Sohna to Lalsot has been Inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi. And very soon Vadodara to Ankleshwar section also be Inaugurated. Officials said the entire expressway will be operational in 2024/25 and will be country’s longest greenfield expressway. NHAI had added DND Flyway to-Sohna-stretch to the expressway package later to provide direct connectivity to the national capital and Jewar Airport Spur to Smooth Connectivity with India's Biggest Noida International Airport and these links (Spurs) would also be completed in time as all the tenders have been awarded. India had a total of 97,830 km of National Highways in 2014-15 which has been expanded to 145,155 km by March 2023. From building 12.1 km per day of roads in 2014-15, the nation is seeing 28.6 km of roads being constructed every day in 2021-22, according to the official data. Roads and highways play a crucial role in a nation's economy. Road transport is the basis of not only economic development but also social development, defence sectors, and access to basic things for life. According to a report, about 85 per cent of passenger and 70 per cent of goods traffic is carried by roads every year, this gives us an idea of its importance.

In India, expressways are controlled-access highways where entrance and exit is controlled by the use of ramps that are incorporated into the design of the expressway, whereas National highways are at-grade roads. Some roads are not access controlled, but are still officially called expressways, such as the Biju Expressway. The majority of the investment required for constructing expressways comes from the Central Government. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are the only states which are investing in building expressways through dedicated expressway corporations. The National Expressways Authority of India (NEAI) operating under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will be in-charge of the construction and maintenance of expressways. The National Highways Development Project by the Government of India aims to expand the country's current expressway network and plans to add an additional 18,637 km of greenfield expressways by 2022 apart from existing national highways. Bharatmala, a centrally-sponsored and funded road and highways project of the Government of India with a target of constructing 83,677 km of new highways over the next five years, was started in 2018. Phase I of the Bharatmala project involves the construction of 34,800 km of highways (including the remaining projects under NHDP) at an estimated cost of ₹5.35 lakh crore by 2021–22. National Highway 44 (NH 44) is the longest National Highway in India, starts from Srinagar and terminates in anyakumari. The NH 44 highway has come into being by merging seven major national highways of old number that include NH 1A,NH 1,NH 2,NH 3, NH 75,NH 26 and NH 7. Officially named ‘Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg’, the 701-km-long expressway connects Mumbai and Nagpur. The expressway connects 10 districts of the state, namely, Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Jalna, Aurangabad, Nashik, Ahmednagar and Thane. The road link is said to be a game changer, especially for the state’s hinterland, as more investments can be attracted with improved connectivity, thereby generating additional employment opportunities. Another 80 km of Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg, between Shirdi and Bharvir village in Igatpuri taluka in Nashik district, will be ready for public use next week. The Shirdi-Bharvir stretch will be inaugurated on 26 May by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, as reported by Indian Express. The first phase of the Samruddhi Mahamarg, connecting Nagpur to the temple town of Shirdi in Ahmednagar district covering a distance of 520 km, has been in operation since December 2022, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it. With the latest stretch getting ready to be inaugurated, a total of 600-km from Nagpur to Igatpuri taluka will be opened to the public. The remaining 100-km stretch under Phase-II between Igatpuri and Vadpe in Thane will be completed by end of this year or by March next year. The 6 lane expressway is 120m broad and is designed for a top speed of 150 kmph (But Permissible Speed would be 120 kmph). The expressway connects the districts of Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Aurangabad, Jalna, Ahmednagar, Nashik and Thane. Its route passes through 3 wildlife sanctuaries. To protect wildlife, several overpasses, underpasses and high culverts will be built. The expressway features a 310m bridge over river Wardha, 33 major bridges, 274 minor bridges, 65 viaducts/flyovers and six tunnels through the Western Ghats.
